Super natural is trending at the moment
Paranormal is the way to go in the current market as metacritic shows. The majority of the top ranking horrors on the well respected review site all involve supernatural beings of some kind apart from Halloween and Sweeney Todd. This could be because the popularity of supernatural has grown over the last few years. However not just in horror in other genres too such as romance (vampire academy etc.). Its also grown in popularity in books as well showing more people are interested nowadays in the mystery and the idea of something outside the normal world we live in, almost an escape you could say. This research has shown us that in order for our film to highly succeed nowadays it should contain some sort of supernatural being and a mystery of some sorts. It also should include a death of somebody close to the main character.
What The Reviewers Love:
While many of these films are supernatural and paranormal films, this reflects what the current market are enjoying. However there is one slasher film included in this list 'Halloween'. Judging by this I can come to the conclusion that we should take inspiration from what Halloween did in order to be considered successful. An obvious example of this would be Halloween's opening, by having a shocking revelation occur right from the get go will immerse the audience as they will want to carry on watching so they can find out what happened to cause this event and about the characters involved.
Coincidentally, our current idea has a shocking reveal at the end of it, by revealing that our lead character was preparing to murder someone the whole time in the sequence. By having a similar concept behind our opening it could prove that our horror film could be just as well received by critics as Halloween was.
